Atlanta Democratic Party leaders and campaigners gathered at Liberty Plaza outside the Georgia Capitol on July 24 to show their excitement for their party’s presumptive presidential nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris. “We’re fired up and ready to go,” they chanted, while cheering and enthusiastically waving campaign signs.
“While Donald Trump wants to take us back, Democrats in Georgia — led by Vice President Kamala Harris — want to take Georgia forward,” said State Sen. Jason Esteves (D-Atlanta). “That’s why we’re ready to show up and show out for Vice President Harris this November.”
If elected, Harris would be the country’s first woman president, first Black female president and first Asian-American president, a point that speakers at the campaign rally did not shy away from. Harris’s vocal stance in favor of national abortion rights also drew fervent applause.
Rally speakers emphasized that Georgia is in play as a key battleground state, since Democratic voters flipped its U.S. Senate races blue by electing Sens. Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock. Fulton County Commission Chair Robb Pitts said Democrats are ready to propel their candidates to victory again in November.
Harris brings renewed youthful energy to the top of the Democratic ticket, Pitts said, which he thinks will be a game-changer. “With the help of the great people of Fulton County, we’ll put Vice President Kamala Harris in the White House as our 47th president of the United States of America,” he vowed.
Democratic Party leaders from across metro Atlanta joined Esteves and Pitts at the rally. That included State Sen. Minority Leader Gloria Butler (D-Stone Mountain), DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond, and three of the party’s county chairs: Carlotta Harrell from Henry, Lisa Cupid from Cobb, and Nicole Love Hendrickson from Gwinnett Counties.
