Raised in Macon, Cowsert received his law degree from the University of Georgia and is a practicing attorney in Athens. He was first elected to the state Senate in 2006, serving Oconee County and parts of Walton and Clarke County. He was elected Senate majority leader in 2014. On his campaign website, Cowsert said he has championed conservative issues as a senator, including significant anti-abortion legislation, education reform, health care reform, reduction in the size of government, and fiscal responsibility. He has an “A” rating from the National Rifle Association, has won the Guardian of Small Business award from the National Federation of Independent Businesses, Legislator of the Year from the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, and has repeatedly received an “Award for Conservative Achievement” from the American Conservative Union.
