How are you the better candidate for improving achievement gaps for students in the district?
One of the greatest challenges that Atlanta Public Schools is facing would be the on-going disparities related to academic achievement gaps amongst the overall total student enrollment population. These gaps heavily impact failing schools, reading levels, and graduation rates specifically within the majority of the Atlanta School Board, District 2 neighborhoods. Since these gaps have increasingly become wider due to the pandemic, we must find ways to continue to address this challenge which centers around a long history of inequity. For example, at the on-set of the pandemic virtual learning, many students did not have a computer or home internet access. I am the better candidate to improve these academic achievement gaps because as a school board member, I will address this issue by ensuring that the Atlanta School Board continue to identify ways to invest more in much needed student resources to bridge these gaps.
Why are you the better choice to address the pandemic learning gap?
I am the better choice to address the pandemic learning gap because I have engaged in many conversations with people who reside within the Atlanta School Board District 2 neighborhoods. After listening to their feedback, my pandemic learning gap proposal to assist students with getting back on track is this: First, we need to ensure that schools are completely open with parents regarding the loss of student learning. Secondly, we need to set a measurement to access a baseline to determine where students are academically. Further, schools can also look at priorities, such as making adjustments to the academic school day and additional after school learning.
How are you the better candidate for improving transparency in APS communications and policy-making with families?
I am a better candidate for improving transparency in APS communications and policy-making with families is the reason why I am running for Atlanta School Board. I am running for Atlanta School Board to restore the confidence of the constituents and stakeholders regarding transparency in education from PreK -12th grade, specifically within the Atlanta District 2 area. As the next Atlanta school board member of District 2, I plan to restore trust by bridging a partnership in a collaborated effort to include students, parents to include senior guardians and families, educators and staff. District 2 deserves a representative that will listen and implement results.
Why are you the better candidate for this office, period?
I am a native of Atlanta and an APS graduate upon entering college. I am a former substitute teacher prior to entering corporate business for 20 years. I believe that every student should be allowed to experience a safe, fair and equitable education. People need to feel that they can trust the school system with day-to-day decisions, which need to make practical sense that impact our students, therefore, new leadership is needed. I will work hard for all people, support ideas, and fight for the needs of students, parents, educators and staff while earning respect. The district deserves a public education representative that is visible and available in the community, which I commit to being as the next Atlanta School Board member of District 2. That is why, I am asking that you cast your run-off vote early from Nov. 14th-Nov. 24th or on Nov. 30th. for Keisha Carey.
