The agriculture commissioner heads the Georgia Department of Agriculture. Primarily a regulatory agency, it promotes Georgia’s agriculture industry domestically and internationally and protects consumers — the commissioner’s purview includes food safety.

The current commissioner, Gary Black (R), didn’t run for reelection. The Republican candidate, Tyler Harper, has served in the state senate for nine years and is a farmer in Ocilla. Neither of his opponents, Nakita Hemingway (D), a cut-flower farmer in Dacula, nor David Raudabaugh (L), a Marietta businessman, has held public office.
