As the votes were tallied, all signs pointed to an unsurprising outcome: former President Donald Trump emerged victorious in the March 12 Republican presidential primary. Despite all other Republican candidates having dropped out, some voters in Georgia still chose non-Trump candidates, reflecting the diversity of opinions within the party.

Georgia’s Democrats who showed up for the primary overwhelmingly voted for President Biden. However, it remains to be seen how the president’s re-election will be impacted by the growing “Keep It Blank” campaign, an effort to push for a permanent ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war. In Georgia, more than 6,000 voters cast a blank ballot in the primary election.

With the Georgia presidential primary now in the rearview mirror, the spotlight will shift to the May 21 primary election. Voters will soon select their preferred candidate in a number of city, county, and federal seats to advance to the November general election. Nonpartisan judicial candidates will appear on both Republican and Democratic ballots.
