The Jan 6 insurrection in The U.S. Capitol was a decisive stress test for American democracy.

What can be done to reimagine and revitalize the tattered concept? What are the most critical elements of a healthy, strong, inclusive democracy in America?

Some of the nation’s top political minds will try to answer those questions and more during next week’s inaugural episode of the “Reimagining American Democracy” speakers series.

The May 20 Zoom event starts at noon and is sponsored by Freedom House, the George W. Bush Institute, Issue One, and the Atlanta-based National Center for Civil and Human Rights.

Former Secretary of State Condolezza Rice, now director of the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, will have a conversation with Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms. The episode also includes a panel discussion featuring former Congressman Will Hurd (R-TX) and Eric Liu, co-founder and chief executive officer of Citizen University & director of the Aspen Institute’s Citizenship & American Identity Program. The panel will be moderated by journalist Jeanne Meserve, a member of the Transatlantic Commission for Election Integrity.

“Reimagining American Democracy” is a monthly virtual series that will focus on what sponsors call “the future and promise of American Democracy.” Discussions will feature experts in the fields of activism, business, journalism, policy, and religion.
