The labor commissioner heads the Georgia Department of Labor and is responsible for enforcing the state’s labor regulations, running the state unemployment office and producing statistics on Georgia’s labor market. The current labor commissioner, Mark Butler (R), is not seeking re-election.

One of the labor commissioner’s key duties is administering unemployment insurance funds to Georgia residents. With ongoing Covid-19 turmoil in the labor market and a looming recession, the newly elected labor commissioner may inherit a labor department in need of support.
